The Vedanta group's appeal against the closure of its copper smelting plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, was rejected by the Supreme Court. Since May 2018, the plant has been shuttered due to allegations of pollution, which resulted in the deaths of thirteen people when police opened fire to put an end to a demonstration.
A bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud declared that the locals' health and welfare are of "utmost concern" and that the state government must uphold and safeguard their rights.
" we have come to the conclusion that the Special Leave Petition (SLP) by the industrial unit shall not warrant interference under Article 136 of the Constitution. For the above reasons, the SLP shall stands dismissed," the bench, also comprising justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, said. The Madras High Court had in August 2020 rejected Vedanta's plea for allowing the reopening of its Sterlite Copper unit.
