Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, a German steelmaker, has signed a 10-year agreement with UK-based Octopus Energy to purchase clean electricity. This partnership aims to support the production of green steel as part of Salzgitter's decarbonisation efforts.
Octopus Energy will supply 126,000 MWh of clean electricity annually from the Schiebsdorf solar farm in Brandenburg. This solar farm is currently under construction and is expected to be operational later this year, coinciding with the start of the long-term agreement.
Salzgitter's parent company, Salzgitter AG, announced this initiative to reduce carbon emissions by 95 percent. They plan to achieve this goal by using green hydrogen, which is produced through the electrolysis of water using renewable energy sources.
This partnership highlights the growing trend among industries to adopt sustainable practices and reduce their carbon footprint. By utilising clean electricity and green hydrogen, Salzgitter is taking significant steps towards achieving its environmental goals and supporting the transition to a greener economy.
