Indian state-run steelmaker Steel Authority of India Ltd's Bokaro Steel Plant (BSP) has signed a pact with power utility Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) to source electricity for the expansion of the steel mill.
According to the deal, DVC will provide an extra 250 MVA (mega volt ampere) to the Bokaro steel plant in addition to the existing 220 MVA energy supply arrangement.
The additional supplies will be provided by DVC's brownfield expansion of its thermal power project at several places, which is expected to be finished around the time the Bokaro steel mill's enlarged capacity begins production, according to officials.
An official said the pre-feasibility report for the expansion of Bokaro is complete and has been approved by the SAIL board in principle. A consultant has already been appointed to prepare the detailed project report.
SAIL plans to expand its crude steel production from the existing 19.51 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) to around 35.65 MMTPA. As part of this project, Bokaro Steel Mill’s crude steel production capacity will be hiked to 7.03 MMTPA from 4.6 MMTPA at present.
