New Delhi, March 6, 2025: Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has announced plans to expand the capacity of its Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) to 9 million tonnes (MT) by 2030 with an investment of ₹30,000 crore. This strategic move aims to strengthen India's position in the global steel market and meet rising domestic demand.
SAIL’s Chairman stated that the investment will focus on enhancing production capabilities, upgrading infrastructure, and improving operational efficiency. The expansion will involve setting up new blast furnaces, installing advanced rolling mills, and modernizing existing facilities.
The Rourkela Steel Plant currently has a production capacity of 4.2 MT. This ambitious project is expected to create significant employment opportunities and boost local economic growth. SAIL is also exploring sustainable manufacturing practices to minimize environmental impact during the expansion.
The steel giant’s move comes amid rising demand for steel in infrastructure, automotive, and construction sectors. The expansion aligns with the Indian government’s target of reaching 300 MT of annual steel production capacity by 2030.
