Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a Maharatna PSU under the Ministry of Steel, has supplied around 8,000 tonnes of critical-grade steel for the Indian Navy’s newly commissioned stealth frigates, INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri.
These advanced warships, part of the Navy’s Project 17A, were commissioned today at the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. This is the first time that two frontline combat vessels built at different shipyards have been commissioned together.
The special-grade hot-rolled sheets and plates were produced at SAIL’s Bokaro, Bhilai, and Rourkela plants. The supply reinforces SAIL’s long-standing role in strengthening India’s defence sector by reducing dependence on imported steel and supporting the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.
Over the years, SAIL has provided steel for several key naval projects, including INS Vikrant, INS Nilgiri, INS Ajay, INS Vindhyagiri, INS Nistar, and INS Surat. With this contribution, the PSU once again underlines its strategic importance in supporting India’s maritime security and shipbuilding capabilities.
