SAIL Powers INS Arnala with Indigenous Steel
The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has supplied the entire special-grade steel requirement for INS Arnala, India’s first indigenously built anti-submarine warfare shallow-water craft (ASW-SWC). The warship was officially commissioned into the Indian Navy on June 18, 2025.
INS Arnala is designed for coastal defence, undersea surveillance, and search-and-rescue missions. The vessel's construction marks a major step in India's push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
By meeting the complete steel demand for INS Arnala, SAIL reinforced its role as a key contributor to India’s strategic sectors. The Maharatna PSU has a strong track record of supplying high-grade steel for critical naval platforms, including INS Vikrant, INS Nilgiri, and others.
This achievement not only highlights SAIL’s technological capabilities but also supports the nation's goal of reducing dependence on imported materials. The Rourkela Steel Plant played a central role in this supply, underlining SAIL’s manufacturing strength and commitment to indigenisation.
In addition, SAIL recently reported a consolidated net profit of ₹1,251 crore for Q4 FY 2024–25, reflecting strong operational performance and cost efficiency.
SAIL’s contribution to INS Arnala is a significant milestone in India’s journey towards defence self-sufficiency and technological advancement.
