The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has initiated trials using green hydrogen in steelmaking as part of its efforts to advance the production of green steel. This marks a major milestone in India’s journey toward decarbonising the steel sector and aligning with the government’s vision of sustainable industrial growth.
The trials are focused on replacing conventional carbon-intensive fuels like coke and coal with green hydrogen, a clean energy alternative produced from renewable sources. SAIL officials highlighted that the initiative aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions during the steelmaking process while maintaining efficiency and product quality.
As one of India’s largest integrated steel producers, SAIL’s adoption of hydrogen-based technology is expected to set a benchmark for the domestic industry and encourage wider adoption of low-carbon solutions. Industry analysts noted that successful trials could pave the way for large-scale commercial use, reducing India’s dependence on traditional high-emission methods.
The move also complements India’s target of producing 300 million tonnes of steel by 2030 in a more sustainable manner and strengthens its competitiveness in the global green steel market.
