The Orissa High Court has reserved its verdict on a petition filed by Jindal Steel & Power Ltd (JSPL) challenging the state government’s decision to revoke its mining permit in Keonjhar district, Odisha.
The dispute pertains to the Sarada iron ore block, where JSPL’s temporary working permit (TWP) was cancelled earlier this year by the Department of Steel and Mines, citing procedural and compliance concerns.
JSPL contended that the revocation was arbitrary and contrary to due process, arguing that the company had complied with all environmental and operational requirements. The company sought judicial intervention to restore its permit and resume mining operations at the site.
The state government, on the other hand, maintained that the permit was issued on provisional terms and was withdrawn following audit findings and policy-level reviews by the mining department.
After hearing detailed arguments from both sides, the High Court reserved its judgment, which is expected to determine whether JSPL can retain its mining rights or if the revocation stands upheld.
The verdict will be significant for Odisha’s mining sector, as it may set a precedent for permit renewals, compliance interpretation, and allocation transparency across similar mineral leases.
