Odisha has emerged as a major player in India’s steel industry, expanding its crude steel production capacity by 6.15 million tonnes over the past five years. The total capacity now stands at 31.48 million tonnes per annum (mtpa), as confirmed by Union Minister of State for Steel, Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, in the Rajya Sabha.
The state currently hosts 60 operational steel plants—59 in the private sector and one under public ownership. Between January 2020 and July 2025, Odisha approved 34 environmental clearances for steel-related projects, signaling strong regulatory support and a favorable industrial environment.
This growth comes amid continued deregulation in the steel sector, allowing private companies to independently secure necessary clearances and approvals. The government has also introduced key policy initiatives, including the mandatory use of domestically manufactured iron and steel in public procurement and the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for specialty steel. These measures aim to reduce import dependence, enhance local manufacturing, and attract private investment.
Odisha's rapid capacity expansion reflects its growing importance in India’s steel supply chain. With abundant mineral resources, supportive policies, and industrial infrastructure, the state is well-positioned to become a central hub for steel production in the country.
The rise in steel capacity not only supports national production goals but also strengthens Odisha’s economy through job creation, infrastructure development, and industrial diversification.
