The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued show cause letters to 11 steel companies across India for failing to satisfy the stated quality criteria for reinforcement steel bars, or rebar, used in highway construction, according to a copy of the authority's notifications.

Steel companies received notifications between June 19 and June 21, claiming concerns about the quality of the TMT bars they supplied. Among the companies that were slapped with notices are Agrawal Foundries Pvt Ltd, MSP Steel and Power Ltd, Shri Bajrang Power and Ispat Ltd, Hira Steel Ltd, Shree Nakoda, Gallant TMT, Prime Gold JVC, Kamachi Industries Limited, SRMB Srijan Pvt Ltd, Shakambari Ispat and Power Ltd, and Maithan Steel and Power.

Thermo-mechanically treated (TMT) bars are essential to the construction of highways because they offer several significant advantages that guarantee the lifetime, safety, and robustness of road infrastructure.

According to the notices, NHAI randomly sampled TMT bars provided by the above steelmakers and tested them in a third-party NABL-accredited lab. The test revealed that the samples did not conform to the specified limits in IS-1786 for chemical composition. NHAI has asked the companies to reply with an explanation within 15 days.

IS-1786 is an Indian standard specification for high-strength, deformed steel bars and wires for concrete reinforcement. This standard specifies the requirements for chemical composition, mechanical properties, and testing methods for TMT bars.
