Prime Minister Narendra Modi intends to inaugurate MMTS phase II - Sanathnagar-Moula Ali and Secunderabad-Ghatkesar - to passengers in March, bringing significant relief to over two lakh people.
According to sources, Modi would be invited to inaugurate the Cherlapally railway terminal, and the two portions may also be opened during his visit. The Sanathnagar-Moula Ali and Ghatkesar-Moula Ali projects were completed while the sections were commissioned.
Passengers had been waiting for the Sanathnagar-Moula Ali segment for a long time due to pollution and traffic congestion. In general, if there is a lot of traffic, travelling by personal automobile takes around an hour. Travel time would decrease to 30 minutes once MMTS service was running.
Moreover, thousands of passengers travel by buses from Ghatkesar to reach the city centre. Now, with the new line getting ready, they can easily reach the city through MMTS services.
As per the agreement between the railways and the state govt, it is a cost-sharing project wherein one-third of the cost is to be borne by the railways, while two-thirds has to be shared by the state govt. The estimated cost was ₹816 crore, accordingly the railway share works out to ₹272 crore, while the state's ₹544 crore. According to railway officials, an expenditure of 835 crore has already been spent on the project.
However, the state government has only deposited ₹379 crore to date. The original sanctioned cost, which was ₹816.55 crore, has now escalated to ₹1,150 crore due to a delay in project execution due to a lack of funds.
"Taking this into account, currently, the state govt has to deposit ₹760 crore towards its share, out of which only ₹379 crore has been deposited to date. Railways has invested ₹580 crore," an official said. The MMTS phase II project, which was sanctioned in 2012, extends for 96 km in seven different sections. Of this, 45.4 km of rail network was completed.
