The Ministry of Steel has granted a Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) compliance exemption to 202 foreign steel licences listed on the Steel Import Monitoring System (SIMS).
The decision, announced on August 8, covers manufacturers from 16 countries, including Japan, South Korea, Germany, Italy, France, Russia, and the United States. Japan leads the list with over 80 licences, followed by South Korea with more than 50.
This temporary exemption aims to ensure uninterrupted supply of specialised steel grades to Indian integrated steel plants, particularly in cases where domestic production does not meet specific requirements.
Officials said the relief will simplify the import process for certain high-quality steel products. More licences could be added to the exemption list in the future based on industry needs.
