Union minister of steel and heavy industries H D Kumaraswamy, along with union tribal affairs minister Jual Oram, has visited Steel Authority of India Ltd’s (SAIL) Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) for a two-day review of operations and expansion projects. The delegation was received by SAIL chairman Amarendu Prakash and the RSP leadership team, before proceeding on a detailed plant tour.
During the visit, Kumaraswamy inaugurated the state-of-the-art Caster-4 at Steel Melting Shop-2, watching slab casting operations and lauding the RSP collective for the successful commissioning of the facility. The new caster is expected to enhance product quality, improve yield and support RSP’s broader modernisation and capacity ramp-up plans.
The ministers also inspected key ongoing projects, including the Pellet Plant and Coke Oven Battery-7, and took stock of progress at Hot Strip Mill-2. Kumaraswamy reiterated the central government’s commitment to support Rourkela’s growth as a strategic steel hub in Odisha, underlining its role in meeting India’s infrastructure and manufacturing needs.
RSP’s management highlighted the plant’s contribution to regional development, employment and downstream eco-system creation. The visit is seen as a signal of sustained policy backing for SAIL’s expansion roadmap and continued investment in advanced steelmaking technologies at Rourkela.
