Kazakhstan is set to strengthen its steelmaking raw material base with the country’s first modern metallurgical coke plant in the Karaganda region. The government has signed an investment agreement with Kazakhstan Success Coking Energy for a full-cycle coke production complex.
The project is planned with an annual capacity of 1 million metric tonnes, making it one of Kazakhstan’s major coal chemical and value-added industrial initiatives. The first phase is expected to start operations in 2029, producing up to 500,000 metric tonnes of metallurgical coke per year, while full capacity is targeted by 2031. The investment is estimated at KZT 63.5 billion, or around $134 million, and is expected to create up to 500 permanent jobs.
The development could support Kazakhstan’s steel sector by improving domestic coke availability and boosting industrial processing in the region.
