The proposed JSW–POSCO greenfield steel plant in Odisha’s Keonjhar district has moved a step closer to reality, with authorities clearing the first tranche of land for the project. The Keonjhar collector has approved the handover of about 99 acres of government land to the state-run Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO).
In a written reply to the Odisha Assembly, Industries, Skill Development and Technical Education Minister Sampad Chandra Swain confirmed that JSW Steel has secured High-Level Clearance Authority (HLCA) approval for a 6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) integrated steel plant in the Patna block of Keonjhar. The project involves an estimated investment of ₹35,000 crore and is expected to generate around 8,000 direct and indirect jobs.
The state government has identified roughly 979.6 acres of government land and 1,465.9 acres of private land across 12 villages in Patna tehsil for acquisition. Officials indicated that only agricultural land will be targeted, avoiding densely inhabited areas to minimise displacement and speed up acquisition. IDCO has already initiated the acquisition process for private land, and applications for environmental clearance will follow.
The Keonjhar plant is part of the broader JSW–POSCO collaboration, which aims to develop a large-scale, value-added steel base in Odisha while leveraging the state’s rich iron ore resources and creating substantial local employment.
