India’s per capita steel consumption has reached 100 kilograms, marking a significant step forward for the country’s steel sector. This announcement was made by Steel Secretary Sandeep Poundrik during a Ministry of Steel event held in New Delhi on August 13, 2025.
The achievement comes as India records over 12% growth in steel production, outperforming global trends that have remained flat or declined. The milestone highlights India’s ongoing infrastructure expansion and rising demand from construction, manufacturing, and urban development sectors.
This progress aligns with the goals outlined in the National Steel Policy 2017, which targets 160 kg per capita consumption and 300 million tonnes of crude steel capacity by 2030-31. Back in 2017, India’s per capita consumption stood at around 60 kg, making the current figure a notable leap in under a decade.
Officials emphasized that while the 100 kg mark is a key achievement, further growth will require sustained investment in capacity building, supply chain efficiency, and green steel initiatives.
India’s steady rise in steel consumption underscores its growing economic strength and commitment to industrial development, positioning the country as a major global player in the steel industry.
