India’s stainless steel imports saw a sharp contraction in January–October 2025, driven by a collapse in Chinese shipments and rising domestic output, according to data reported by SteelOrbis and BigMint. Total stainless imports fell 21% year-on-year to 0.73 million tonnes, from 0.93 million tonnes in the same period of 2024. Of this, around 0.72 million tonnes were finished flat products, down 22%, while long product imports slipped 16% to 23,300 tonnes.
The import mix shifted significantly by origin and grade. China, traditionally India’s dominant stainless supplier, recorded an unprecedented ~70% drop in flat product shipments to about 0.16 million tonnes, with part of the gap filled by higher inflows from Vietnam, South Korea and Thailand. At the same time, India’s stainless steel production rose 8% to about 3.2 million tonnes, as flats output grew 6% and longs surged 25%, enabling domestic mills to replace imported commodity grades.
Series-wise, 300-series flat imports actually rose 14% to 0.33 million tonnes, reflecting steady demand from process industries and high-end uses, while 400-series imports declined 29% and 200-series showed a mild 3% dip. Market participants expect imports to remain moderate in the near term as buyers await clarity on 2026 BIS and QCO implementation, despite temporary relaxations in place until 31 December 2025.
