India's mineral production from mining and quarrying increased 5.9% year over year, according to Press Information Bureau (PIB) data released on Wednesday. As power consumption increased, the country produced more than 99.8 million tonnes (MT) of coal over the time.
India, the second-largest coal-consuming country in the world, produced record amounts of coal-fired energy in January due to power generation companies' failure to significantly reduce their use of coal and other fossil fuels in response to the growing demand for air cooling.
Amidst rising steel demand in the nation, other minerals, such as iron ore, a crucial raw ingredient for steel, saw a nearly 41% YoY gain in sales value. In the month, India produced 25.2 MT of iron ore. The PIB release also showed that the production of minerals such as Magnesite - used to make synthetic rubber - grew over 90%, and copper concentrate - used to make refined copper - grew over 34%.
India's refined copper production is estimated at around 555,000 million tonnes per year in the coming fiscal year, while domestic consumption is expected to reach more than 750,000 MT.
