India became a net importer of finished steel in April 2026 as imports outpaced exports due to rising domestic demand and increased overseas shipments. According to provisional government data, finished steel imports rose 30.8% year-on-year to nearly 0.7 million tonnes, while exports increased 24.9% to around 0.5 million tonnes.

China, South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, and Russia remained the leading exporters of finished steel to India during the month. Industry analysts said strong domestic consumption from infrastructure, construction, and manufacturing sectors contributed to higher import dependence despite growth in local steel production.

The development comes shortly after India regained net exporter status for the full FY2025-26 fiscal year, highlighting the volatility in global steel trade flows and pricing trends. Experts believe competitive imports, especially from Asian markets, continue to pressure domestic steel prices and profitability for Indian producers. Industry stakeholders are also closely monitoring government trade policies, safeguard duties, and global demand conditions as India aims to balance domestic supply security with export competitiveness in the rapidly evolving steel market.
