India is poised to significantly expand its nuclear power capacity with the addition of 18 new nuclear power reactors by 2031-32. These reactors will have a combined capacity to generate 13,800 megawatts electric (MWe) of electricity, contributing to a total share of atomic power amounting to 22,480 MWe in the country's energy mix. This announcement was made by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) following the dedication of two home-built 700 MW nuclear power reactors at Kakrapar in Gujarat by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Presently, NPCIL operates 24 reactors with a total capacity of 8,180 MWe. The recently inaugurated units 3 & 4 of the Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS 3 & 4), each with a capacity of 700 MW, are the largest indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) boasting advanced safety features comparable to the best globally.
These reactors have been entirely designed, constructed, commissioned, and operated by NPCIL, with contributions from Indian industries and companies, reflecting the true spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India), as emphasised by the NPCIL.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted the increasing role of nuclear power in electricity generation in the 21st century, expressing pride in India's self-sufficiency in this advanced technology. He also visited the Kakrapar Atomic Power Station and toured the Control Room on the occasion.
India's nuclear expansion plans also include the construction of four 1,000 MWe nuclear power plants at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu with Russian assistance, as well as four 700 MWe home-built PHWRs at Rawatbhata (RAPS 7 & 8) in Rajasthan and Gorakhpur (GHAVP 1 & 2) in Haryana. Additionally, ten 700 MWe PHWRs have been sanctioned for construction at various locations, further underscoring India's commitment to bolstering its nuclear energy infrastructure.
