India’s Minister of State for Steel, Bhupathiraju Srinivas Varma, met Sara Modig, Sweden’s State Secretary to the Minister for Energy, Business and Industry, to explore cooperation on green steel technologies.
Discussions focused on joint R&D partnerships, knowledge exchange on low-carbon iron and steelmaking, and pathways to cut emissions across the value chain ranging from hydrogen-ready DRI and EAF routes to energy efficiency, waste-heat recovery and advanced materials. The two sides also touched on skills development, standards and certification, and opportunities for Indian and Swedish companies to collaborate on pilots and supply-chain localization.
Highlighting robust domestic demand estimated in the low double digits, India invited Swedish participation at Bharat Steel 2026, an international conference-cum-exhibition scheduled for April 2026. The engagement aims to connect Sweden’s technology strengths with India’s scale-up needs as the sector adds capacity while pursuing decarbonisation goals.
Officials indicated that follow-up interactions will map specific areas for collaboration, including demonstration projects with Indian steelmakers, research linkages with institutes, and mechanisms to facilitate financing for clean-technology adoption.
