India–US Trade Tensions Rise Over Steel and Auto Tariffs NMDC Limited reports a 38% drop in Q4 FY24 consolidated net profit RINL to Raise $23 Million Through Land Sales Amid Crisis
India is pushing for fairer trade terms for its steel and aluminium exports in ongoing negotiations with the United States and the European Union, according to the Engineering Export Promotion Council of India (EEPC India).
The council urged the government to address high import tariffs imposed by the US under Section 232, which currently reach up to 50% on certain metal products. EEPC noted that such duties have made Indian exports less competitive and called for targeted policy support to help small and medium-sized manufacturers.
In discussions with the European Union, India is also seeking relief from restrictive tariff-rate quotas that could further limit access for Indian steel and aluminium goods. EEPC has requested that stainless-steel long products and MSME-led categories be exempted or offered gradual tariff reductions over five years.
The move aligns with India’s broader trade strategy to improve global market access, promote value-added metal exports, and ensure a level playing field for domestic producers amid evolving trade barriers and carbon regulations like the EU’s CBAM.
