India is deepening its trade partnership with Russia to import specialty steel grades, as European and US sanctions continue to disrupt global supply chains and affect traditional sourcing routes.
According to industry executives, several Indian steel producers — including JSW Steel, Tata Steel, and SAIL — are exploring long-term contracts with Russian mills for high-grade and alloy steels used in defence, automotive, and engineering applications.
The move aims to address supply shortages caused by restrictions on Western suppliers, while offering India access to cost-effective, high-quality steel. Officials said Russian producers are keen to expand their footprint in the Indian market amid reduced demand from sanctioned economies.
While this partnership helps bridge the supply gap, experts caution that logistical challenges and payment mechanisms under sanctions could affect trade volumes.
Industry observers believe this growing Indo-Russian collaboration will not only diversify India’s import sources but also strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities, particularly in specialty and high-performance steel segments critical for India’s industrial and defence expansion.
