India Proposes Anti-Dumping Duty on Steel Imports from Vietnam

India’s Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) has recommended a five-year anti-dumping duty of $121.5 per tonne on hot-rolled flat steel products imported from Vietnam. The move is designed to protect Indian steelmakers such as Tata Steel, JSW, and SAIL from unfairly priced imports that have surged in recent years.

According to DGTR’s findings, Vietnamese steel was being dumped at prices that harmed the domestic industry. Imports of these products more than doubled, rising from 1.87 million tonnes in FY23 to over 4 million tonnes in FY25, prompting concern among Indian manufacturers.

The proposed duty aims to restore fair competition, stabilize domestic prices, and support capacity utilization across India's steel sector. Industry experts believe the move will encourage further investment in the country’s steel manufacturing ecosystem.

This recommendation follows earlier trade protection measures, including a temporary 12% safeguard duty introduced in April to counter rising steel imports, especially from China and other Southeast Asian nations.

If approved by the Finance Ministry, the new duty will reinforce India’s strategy to defend its core industries from unfair global trade practices while promoting long-term industrial growth.
