Government of India has informed the Lok Sabha that GST officers are utilising advanced data analytics and artificial intelligence tools such as business intelligence and fraud analytics to identify potentially risky taxpayers involved in passing or availing of fake input tax credits. Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary, revealed in a written reply that a total of 14,597 cases of GST evasion were registered by central tax officers from April to December 2023.

Among the states, Maharashtra saw the highest number of cases with 2,716, followed by Gujarat with 2,589, Haryana with 1,123, and West Bengal with 1,098 cases. Various tools, such as NETRA, BIFA, and ADVAIT, are being employed to identify such risky taxpayers, including in Andhra Pradesh.

During the same period, GST intelligence officers have detected fake input tax credit (ITC) cases worth ₹18,000 crore and have arrested 98 fraudsters or masterminds involved in such activities. The tools used by GST officials are regularly updated and modified based on feedback received from field formations.

Chaudhary also highlighted that the GST registration process incorporates robust checks such as physical verification of premises and Aadhar authentication, which have helped in the early detection of fraudulent registrations and significantly reduced such occurrences. Additionally, pilot projects on risk-based biometric-based Aadhaar authentication for registration applications are being conducted in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry. These measures underscore the government's commitment to combating tax evasion and ensuring the integrity of the GST system.
