The government has mandated that stainless steel and aluminium cooking utensils meet national quality standards, according to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), to improve customer safety and product quality. Under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) issued a Quality Control Order requiring these kitchen items to have the ISI mark.
BIS creates the Indian Standards Institution (ISI) mark, which guarantees the quality and safety of products. BIS states that the order forbids any aluminium or stainless steel utensils without the BIS standard mark from being made, imported, sold, distributed, stored, or exhibited for sale. In a statement, the government said that non-compliance with the order will attract penalties, underscoring its commitment to consumer safety and product integrity.
This development follows the BIS' recent formulation of comprehensive standards for kitchen items, including IS 14756:2022 for stainless steel and IS 1660:2024 for aluminium utensils. Standards cover material requirements, design specifications, and performance parameters. The government said this move will enhance consumer confidence and drive manufacturers towards adopting best practices.
