The Union Cabinet has approved a significant ₹8,500 cr incentive scheme for coal gasification projects in India. This move aims to promote the adoption of gasification technology, ultimately reducing the country's dependence on imported natural gas, methanol, ammonia, and other essential products.
The approved scheme is geared towards achieving the gasification of 100 million tonnes (MT) of coal by the year 2030. In the gasification process, coal undergoes partial oxidation using air, oxygen, steam, or carbon dioxide under controlled conditions. This results in the production of a versatile liquid fuel known as syngas.
Syngas, or synthesis gas, has various applications, including power generation and the production of methanol. By investing in coal gasification projects, the government aims to enhance domestic production of these critical products, thereby boosting self-sufficiency and reducing reliance on imports.
This initiative aligns with broader goals of energy security and sustainability, as it encourages the utilisation of indigenous resources for essential products. The ₹8,500 cr incentive scheme signals the government's commitment to fostering technological advancements and innovative solutions in the energy sector. With a target of gasifying 100 MT of coal by 2030, the scheme sets a clear trajectory for the country's energy landscape, emphasising cleaner and more self-reliant practices.
