Germany’s crude steel production dropped sharply by 10.1% year-on-year in April 2025, falling to 2.95 million tonnes, as reported by the German Steel Industry Association (WVStahl). The decline reflects persistent market pressures, reduced demand, and economic slowdowns across industrial sectors.
Breaking down the numbers:
Oxygen converter steel output fell 12.6% YoY to 2 million tonnes.
Electric arc furnace (EAF) steel production dipped 4.3% YoY to 946,000 tonnes.
Pig iron production also slipped 11.2% to 1.86 million tonnes.
In the January–April 2025 period, total crude steel production reached 11.45 million tonnes, registering an 11.9% decline versus the same period in 2024. Both converter and EAF-based steel producers reported reduced volumes, reflecting the strain on Germany’s industrial base amid energy costs and global demand concerns.
Industry experts suggest the sector is banking on green hydrogen initiatives and advanced steelmaking technologies to stabilize and revive growth in the medium term.
