German Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil has called for a complete halt to Russian steel imports, urging the European Union to close remaining loopholes in its sanctions regime ahead of a high-level steel meeting at the Chancellery.
Klingbeil singled out semi-finished steel slabs that enter the EU and are subsequently processed by local rerollers, arguing these flows undermine the intent of sanctions and should be stopped “as quickly as possible.” He framed the move as necessary to protect European industry and reduce economic links with Russia.
The appeal comes as policymakers debate tighter trade defences and industrial support amid global oversupply and rising protectionism. While previous EU packages restricted many finished steel products, certain slab imports have continued under transition allowances, prompting calls from industry and political leaders for a full ban.
Officials say any additional measures will seek to bolster EU mills, ensure a level playing field, and align trade policy with broader security and climate objectives. Further steps are expected to be discussed with industry representatives in the coming days.
