Germany has announced its support for the European Union’s plan to strengthen protection for the regional steel industry, addressing challenges such as high energy costs, rising imports, and unfair competition.
At the recent European Steel Summit, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the need for coordinated EU action to safeguard jobs and ensure the long-term competitiveness of Europe’s steel sector. The plan includes stricter import monitoring, adjustments to the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), and measures to control low-cost steel inflows from Russia and other non-EU producers.
Merz also called for a comprehensive industrial strategy, combining green transition efforts with energy price stabilization to help European steelmakers stay competitive globally.
