The German Steel Federation, WV Stahl, has welcomed the European Union’s new steel safeguard quota measures, calling them an important step for protecting steel production in Germany and across Europe. The proposed system introduces tariff-rate quotas based on countries and steel product categories. Imports exceeding the approved quota limits may face a 50% tariff, helping reduce pressure from rising steel imports.
WV Stahl said the move comes at a critical time as Europe’s steel sector faces global overcapacity, state-supported competition and growing trade protection in other markets. The federation warned that weak safeguards could hurt investment, employment and Europe’s shift toward climate-friendly steelmaking.
The association also urged strict implementation, wider product coverage and stronger “melted and poured” origin rules to prevent loopholes. It said the EU must now turn the policy decision into an effective tool for fair competition and stable steel supply chains.
