The European Commission has postponed the launch of its Industrial Accelerator Act by a week as member states disagree over proposed “Made in Europe” sourcing rules. The plan, now expected on March 4, would set minimum local-content thresholds for industrial components used in publicly funded projects across key sectors such as batteries, solar, wind power, and nuclear technology.
France and other supporters want stronger “buy European” requirements to protect manufacturers from cheaper imports and reinforce industrial competitiveness under the EU’s Clean Industrial Deal. But countries including Sweden and the Czech Republic warn strict thresholds could raise procurement costs, deter investment, and weaken the bloc’s global edge.
Industry stakeholders are also pressing for clarity on who qualifies under “Europe” in tightly linked supply chains, with calls to consider close partners beyond the EU and EFTA, including the UK and Turkey.
