· EU proposes 25% retaliatory tariffs on select US imports.
· Move triggered by concerns over return of US tariffs on EU metals.
· Trade tensions rise; diplomatic solutions still under exploration.
A confidential draft document reviewed by media sources reveals that the European Commission is preparing a 25% counter-tariff plan on selected US imports, escalating tensions amid growing protectionist trade measures.
The proposal comes as a direct response to fears of revived Trump-era tariffs on EU steel and aluminum. Brussels aims to defend the bloc’s economic interests and industrial competitiveness, should the US reimpose tariffs or withdraw from current trade arrangements.
Items under consideration for the counter-duties include motorcycles, bourbon, textiles, and various food products, strategically chosen to impact key US states with strong industrial lobbies. The EU is seeking diplomatic channels first, but the draft shows that officials are not ruling out firm retaliatory steps.
The European Commission emphasized its commitment to a rules-based international trading system but reiterated its readiness to act swiftly to protect EU industries from “unfair and unilateral US actions.”
This move could reignite a transatlantic trade dispute, previously cooled by negotiations and temporary tariff suspensions. Both sides now face renewed pressure to reach a balanced resolution without triggering wider economic fallout.
