Out of the 58 coal mines reviewed, 54 are currently producing, with 4 more expected to commence production soon.
Between April 2023 and February 2024, the total coal production from these mines reached approximately 125.33 million tonnes, a notable increase from the 99.50 million tonnes produced during the same period in the previous fiscal year, marking a growth of around 26%. Similarly, the dispatch during this period increased to 127.6 million tonnes, up from 98.13 million tonnes in the previous fiscal year, indicating a growth of 30%.
Notably, the average daily coal production in February 2024 reached 5.14 lakh tonnes, a milestone achievement in the history of coal production from captive and commercial coal mines. Moreover, the total production from these mines has already exceeded last year's total production of 116.55 million tonnes.
During the review, a detailed analysis of coal production and dispatch was conducted with the respective coal companies from the power sector, non-regulated sector, and coal sales. While acknowledging the increase in coal production, all allottees were encouraged to further enhance production where feasible. It was emphasised that any constraints in coal production and dispatch should be promptly brought to the notice of the Ministry of Coal for timely resolution.
Shri. M. Nagaraju advised allottees to expedite the operationalisation of coal blocks in advanced stages to support the sector's growth. The review reflects a positive trend in coal production and underscores the importance of continued efforts to ensure sustained growth in the sector.
