Coal India Limited (CIL) has announced ambitious plans to establish 3 gigawatts (GW) of solar power projects as part of its strategy to achieve a net-zero target by the fiscal year 2025-26. The state-run mining giant is also committed to adding 2 GW of renewable energy, aiming for a total installed capacity of 5 GW to strengthen its renewable energy footprint.

As part of this initiative, CIL has outlined its efforts in a recent Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited for the development of a 1,190 MW solar power plant at a solar park in Bikaner, Rajasthan.

Additionally, CIL has pledged a 379 MW capacity across its subsidiaries, with projects at various stages of implementation. The company has awarded work for the execution of 379 MW of SPV solar projects at multiple locations, and it expects to commission 180 MW of ground-mounted solar projects and 15 MW of rooftop solar projects in the fiscal year 2023-24.

CIL is actively participating in PAN-India solar tenders by entities like GUVNL and SECI to achieve its target of 5 GW of renewable energy capacity. With the commissioning of 43.20 MW of solar power and an additional 15 MW of rooftop solar projects slated for completion by FY24, CIL is making significant strides towards its renewable energy goals.
