In order to establish the nation's first green hydrogen plant within an airport, the Cochin International Airport (CIAL) stated on Wednesday that it had inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL). According to the agreement, BPCL will invest ₹30 crore and set up the plant at Kochi Airport and impart technology.

CIAL will provide suitable land, water, and green energy for the plant which is expected to be completed in early 2025. Initially, the plant will provide 220 kg of hydrogen a day which can be used for operating vehicles plying in the airport, it added. “This strategic collaboration underscores CIAL’s commitment to green energy and propels closer towards a zero-carbon future in the aviation landscape,” said S Suhas, managing director, CIAL.

CIAL is the world’s first fully solar-powered airport and this will be the first ever green hydrogen plant in the country to be set up in an airport. The agreement exchange ceremony for the green hydrogen plant was held at Legislative Complex, Thiruvananthapuram in the presence of Pinarayi Vijayan, Chief Minister of Kerala, who is also the chairman of CIAL.

BPCL Chairman and Managing Director G Krishnakumar said that the collaboration represents a pivotal moment in the journey towards sustainable solutions, demonstrating the potential for innovation and partnership to drive a meaningful change. BPCL recently demonstrated its capability to produce green hydrogen using the alkaline electrolysis process with the technological input from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and is planning to set up a plant in its Bina refinery in Madhya Pradesh.

The CIAL has 50-MW green energy installed capacity producing two hundred thousand units of power a day, it has now inked an MoU for a strategic collaboration with BPCL for setting up a 500-KW pilot project at the airport premises.
