The mines ministry has requested the Jharkhand government to sell 10 mineral blocks, including a gold mine, and has warned that if the state fails to do so, the Centre will initiate the auction process, per sources. The blocks are under investigation at the G2 (general) and G3 (preliminary) levels, they added. The sources further stated that among the ten blocks are mines for copper, limestone, and graphite.

The mining rules were amended in 2021, and if a state government does not auction the mines within the mutually agreed-upon timeframe, the Centre may be able to put mineral blocks up for sale. According to sources, the Jharkhand government lags behind other states in the auctioning of mining blocks.

So far, only five of the 38 geological studies handed over by the Geological Survey of India to the Jharkhand government have been auctioned. The state government promised to notify 15 blocks for auction by December 2021. However, the state has only announced that four parcels are up for auction. The Centre will hold an auction for the crucial potash block from the 11 remaining mines.

The state still needs to notify the remaining 10 blocks for auction. Thus far in the current fiscal year, twelve mining blocks have been successfully auctioned off. All of the blocks auctioned are located in Rajasthan. The blocks have been bagged by companies such as Ambuja Cements Ltd and J K Cement Ltd.
