SAIL’s Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) has developed a 28MnB5 manganese–boron steel tailored for agricultural and earth-moving applications, positioning it as a first within the SAIL group for this segment.
Engineered for high strength, hardness and abrasion resistance, the grade is suited to wear-intensive parts such as ploughshares, cultivator blades, disc harrows, shovels and digger claws. The alloy design and heat-treat response aim to reduce breakage, extend tool life and improve reliability during heavy field operations.
BSL says the product has already seen commercial traction, with over 60,000 tonnes supplied since development, and annual production targeted at about 80,000 tonnes. The mill is engaging equipment makers to supply in required sizes and conditions, supporting localized manufacturing of high-performance components.
The initiative is expected to lower import dependence, widen the domestic portfolio of specialized steels, and benefit rural supply chains through better availability of durable farm-implement materials. It aligns with broader efforts to diversify steel grades for sectoral needs while deepening linkages with agricultural equipment OEMs and aftermarket fabricators across India.
