Brazil Approves CSN Steel Slag for Agricultural UseBrazil’s Ministry of Agriculture has registered steel slag produced by Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) as a fertilizer raw material for correcting soil acidity, opening a regulated route for its agricultural application nationwide.
The authorization follows a technical evaluation of the slag’s chemistry, safety and neutralizing properties and comes after new field evidence indicating that steel-slag applications increase porewater pH, soil pH and calcium saturation effects interpreted as enhanced rock weathering (ERW) under real-world conditions. The ministry’s registration classifies the material specifically as a raw input for acidity-correcting fertilizer formulations rather than as a finished fertilizer product.
The decision creates a new end-use channel for a steel co-product, allowing its incorporation into agricultural inputs designed to improve acidic soils and support crop productivity. Regulators and industry emphasised that the approval is contingent on material specifications and appropriate formulation and application practices to ensure environmental safety.
The move also arrives amid scrutiny of historical slag management at CSN, including earlier legal and environmental concerns over legacy deposits. The registration is likely to spur further industry interest in circular-economy uses for steel by-products while raising focus on monitoring and best-practice application in agricultural settings.
