ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AMNS) has been hit with a hefty fine of ₹106 crore for allegedly encroaching on government land valued at ₹1,200 crore in Surat, Gujarat. Local authorities accused the steel giant of unauthorized occupation on prime land, sparking controversy and legal action.
According to the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), the encroached land, situated in Hazira, was intended for public use and infrastructure development. However, AMNS allegedly extended its industrial operations onto this land without obtaining the necessary permits.
The SMC issued the fine following a detailed investigation that revealed the extent of the encroachment. In response, AMNS has stated that they are reviewing the allegations and will comply with legal requirements. “We are committed to resolving this matter amicably and in full cooperation with the authorities,” an AMNS spokesperson said.
This incident has raised concerns about corporate land usage practices and the enforcement of land laws in industrial zones. Local political leaders and activists are urging stricter regulations to prevent similar cases in the future.
As the legal proceedings unfold, all eyes are on how ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India will address the allegations and the financial implications of the fine. This development also puts the spotlight on land acquisition practices in rapidly growing industrial hubs like Surat.
