Empowering India through solar energy: Comprehensive analysis of PM Suryodaya Yojana

Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 22, represents a landmark initiative aimed at transforming the energy landscape of India. This visionary scheme seeks to provide 'zero' electricity bills to poor and middle-class citizens while empowering them to harness the sun's energy through rooftop solar panels installed on their homes.

The core objective of the Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana is to make electricity bills 'zero' for poor and middle-class households by installing solar panels on their rooftops. Under this initiative, approximately 1 crore households will benefit from the installation of solar panels, leading to potential annual savings of up to ₹18,000 crore. Beneficiaries will receive 300 units of free solar electricity and will have the option to sell surplus power to commercial units, thereby enabling them to generate additional income.

Prime Minister Modi emphasised the significance of this scheme during his public address in Guwahati, highlighting the government's commitment to providing clean and affordable energy to all sections of society. By promoting the adoption of solar rooftops, the government aims to reduce dependence on traditional energy sources and foster self-reliance in the field of energy production.

Implementation and Support

The implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana is supported by a comprehensive plan involving campaigns and promotions to encourage participation from the public. Citizens will be encouraged to volunteer for the rooftop solar panel plan, thereby contributing to India's energy transition while benefiting financially from the scheme. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in her Budget speech, reiterated the government's commitment to promoting renewable energy by announcing the rooftop solar panel scheme for 1 crore households.

In addition to providing free electricity to households, the scheme aims to boost the sale of electric vehicles by enabling the setup of charging stations at home. This holistic approach towards promoting renewable energy aligns with the government's vision of achieving 'Atmanirbharta' (self-reliance) in the energy sector.

During the inauguration of projects worth ₹11,599 crore in Guwahati, Prime Minister Modi reiterated the government's focus on making electricity bills 'zero' for households. He highlighted the announcement of a significant rooftop solar scheme in the budget, wherein the government aims to assist one crore families in installing solar panels. This initiative not only promotes renewable energy adoption but also stimulates economic growth by creating opportunities in the solar energy sector.

Among the projects inaugurated was the Maa Kamakhya Divya Pariyojana, sanctioned under the Prime Minister's Development Initiative for the North Eastern Region (PM-DevINE) scheme.
