American steel producers have raised concerns that new import tariffs and regulatory costs are putting pressure on new metallurgical and green steel projects across the United States.
According to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), the recently implemented trade measures while aimed at curbing unfair imports are inadvertently increasing costs for domestic producers who rely on specialty raw materials and equipment sourced globally.
Industry leaders warned that the rising expenses may delay or downsize planned investments in low-emission and electric arc furnace (EAF) projects that are essential for achieving carbon reduction goals.
Several steelmakers have urged the U.S. government to review the tariff policy to ensure that it supports, rather than hinders, the country’s industrial decarbonization and infrastructure initiatives.
Analysts said these policy challenges could slow the modernization of U.S. steel capacity, affecting competitiveness against producers in Europe and Asia that are advancing green steel transitions with state-backed incentives.
The industry continues to advocate for balanced trade policies that protect local manufacturing while enabling the import of critical materials needed for innovation and sustainability.
