U.S. steel import permit applications climbed to 1.651 million net tons in February, up 5.2% from January, according to AISI data based on the Commerce Department’s SIMA system. Finished steel import permits, however, slipped 4.8% to 1.189 million net tons, with finished steel holding an estimated 15% market share in February and year to date. The biggest month-on-month gains were seen in structural pipe and tubing, hot rolled bars, line pipe, billets, blooms and slabs, and wire rods. South Korea, Canada, Brazil, Mexico and Japan led February permit applications, keeping the U.S. steel trade market in focus.
