Tata Steel announced plans to cut around 800 jobs—roughly 20% of its workforce in the Netherlands—as part of its ongoing restructuring and green transition strategy at its IJmuiden plant.
The company aims to streamline operations and reduce emissions as it shifts towards more sustainable steelmaking, including a move to hydrogen-based steel production. The job cuts are part of a broader plan to improve operational efficiency and long-term viability amid rising environmental and cost pressures in Europe.
Tata Steel’s IJmuiden facility, known for its high-end flat steel production, will remain a critical part of the group’s European operations. However, management stated that the reduction in headcount is necessary to maintain competitiveness and align with climate targets set by the Dutch government and the EU.
The company also assured that it will minimize social impact through negotiations with unions and explore options such as early retirement and reskilling.
