Tata Steel Nederland (TSN) has agreed to acquire Vattenfall’s power assets in the IJmond region, a move aimed at strengthening its energy independence and supporting its green steel transition.
The deal covers three power plants that are already closely integrated with TSN’s IJmuiden steelworks. Two plants in Velsen-Noord generate electricity using process gases from steel production, while a third facility on the TSN site produces both power and steam for the mill.
Once the transaction is completed, around 116 employees will transfer from Vattenfall to Tata Steel Nederland, with the handover targeted for 1 January 2026, subject to regulatory and other customary approvals.
TSN CEO Hans van den Berg said that owning these assets will give the company greater control over its energy value chain, helping it to manage the phased shift to low-carbon technologies, including future DRI–EAF-based production.
The acquisition is aligned with TSN’s broader decarbonisation roadmap, developed in coordination with the Dutch government, and is expected to play a key role in ensuring reliable, efficient and progressively cleaner energy for its operations in the years ahead.
