Jatinder Mehra, widely regarded as a quiet powerhouse in India’s steel and metals sector, has passed away at 86 after a career spanning more than six decades. He served as vice chairman of Essar’s Metals & Mining division, where colleagues credit him with blending deep technical understanding and strong operational leadership.
Mehra played a key role in strengthening Essar’s steelmaking capabilities at Hazira and advancing integrated steel plans such as the Paradip project in Odisha. Earlier, he also held senior roles at Steel Authority of India (SAIL) and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited, influencing some of the country’s biggest production hubs.
