The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued notices to a steel plant in Jharsuguda district, Odisha, over alleged illegal encroachment and environmental violations. The action follows complaints from local residents and environmental activists regarding unauthorized land use and pollution in the area.
According to reports, the tribunal has sought detailed responses from the concerned company, the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB), and the district administration. The NGT has directed authorities to submit a factual report outlining compliance with environmental clearance conditions and land-use permissions.
Locals allege that the plant expanded operations beyond its approved boundaries, affecting nearby agricultural land and water sources. The tribunal’s intervention aims to ensure accountability and prevent further ecological damage.
Officials from the state pollution board have been instructed to carry out a site inspection and verify whether emissions, waste management, and effluent discharge norms are being followed.
The NGT has scheduled the next hearing after receiving reports from all parties, signalling a stricter approach toward enforcing environmental compliance in Odisha’s industrial belt.
