China significantly increased exports of semi-finished steel products during the first four months of 2026, highlighting shifting global trade dynamics and rising overseas demand. According to customs data, China’s exports of semi-finished steel products surged 47.8% year-on-year to approximately 4.94 million tonnes between January and April. In April alone, shipments reached around 1.64 million tonnes.
Industry analysts noted that Chinese steelmakers are increasingly focusing on semi-finished products such as slabs and billets as trade barriers and anti-dumping duties continue targeting finished steel exports in several global markets. Semi-finished steel products currently face fewer restrictions, making them more competitive in international trade.
Strong export growth has also been supported by weaker domestic steel demand in China and increasing demand from countries seeking affordable raw steel materials for downstream manufacturing. Markets in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and other developing regions have emerged as major buyers of Chinese semi-finished steel products.Experts believe the rising exports could intensify global concerns over steel oversupply and pricing pressure, especially for steel producers in Asia, Europe, and North America already facing competitive import challenges.
