Malaysia has launched a comprehensive roadmap to transform its steel sector into a fully green industry by 2050.
The plan includes restructuring licensing systems, introducing carbon pricing frameworks, and providing better access to finance for green and high-value steel production. Trade Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz emphasized that steel, one of Malaysia’s most carbon-intensive industries, must decarbonize to stay globally competitive.
The roadmap also addresses overcapacity risks, with projections showing upstream capacity could hit 40.8 million tonnes by 2030 against domestic demand of only 14.7 million tonnes. To counter this, Malaysia is pushing for ASEAN-level cooperation, including shared capacity databases, common decarbonisation pathways, and establishing green steel hubs.
Officials believe the strategy will not only strengthen domestic competitiveness but also position Malaysia as a regional leader in sustainable steel production, aligning economic growth with environmental targets.
