The state-run Indian Oil Corporation Ltd is in exploratory talks with the atomic power monopoly about building small nuclear units, an early-stage technology considered as a cheaper alternative to larger reactors.
According to Indian Oil's director of research and development, the refiner and gasoline reseller is looking at collaborating with the government-run Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. to employ small modular reactors, or SMRs, in its refineries for clean power.
Policymakers are pushing small-scale nuclear technology with a capacity of up to 300 MW since it is easier to modify to the grid's requirements and can be built more quickly, especially in light of the delays experienced by several larger projects. The government is considering letting private companies run and maintain reactors to stimulate the emerging industry.
Besides Indian Oil, NTPC Ltd and ONGC are among the companies exploring opportunities in nuclear.
